Hinata Asahi is the daughter of a very wealthy buisness owner. She lost her mother five years prior after many years of being sick, and the last birthday gifts her mother gave her was a pair of teddy bears, one white (Tono) and one black (Waka). Because of her father's wealth and status, coupled with her naieve nature, Hinata has in the past been kidnaped 9 times. Because this affected her father and people connected to her (such as family drivers or servants who did didn't want blamed) Hinata decided to live by herself.
She transfered to a new school, (followed by her closest friend, Touko, who wanted to keep an eye on her and make sure she was all right) and moved into a very large house all alone, bringing along her two teddy bears, Waka and Tono. She keeps them with her at all times while at home, even bringing them to the table to eat with her, and leaving them sitting at the door when she goes out.
Hinata had always admired the little house next to hers, which had been empty for as long as she had lived next to it, telling her bears that she'd love to live in a house like that, even though hers was much bigger. She was surprised one day to see lights on on the house next door, and (with Waka in tow) climbed over her fence to see who had moved in. She quite literally stubled upon Shiro Asou, a tall, quiet man who, as she would learn the next morning, was to be her substitute homeroom teacher while her regular teacher was away on maternity leave.
Hinata quickly grew attached to Shiro, even though this caused her friends, Touko and Emi, to become worried for her, knowing her history. But due to a series of seemingly coincidental meetings along with their daily walks to and from school, Hinata became more and more attached to Shiro. She quickly met his two "friends", Tomoaki Namiya, and Masaya Kizu. She quickly learned that Tomoaki was a writer (who ocasionally writes porn novels, which is not something Hinata understands) who writes her favorite series of childrens books, about little bears. Most recently he'd been writing a series called "Suki" about a small yellow bear and a big black bear with glasses, who's story Hinata instantly recognized as being similar to she and Shiro.
But the longer Hinata spent time with Shiro, the more strange thigns began to happen. The flowers infront of her house, near her front window, were trampled, one day when she arrived home Waka and Tono had been knocked over, and more and more Touko and Emi worried. Hinata waved off their worries, assuring them that she was fine and that Shiro was not a bad person. After all, she loved him and had no hesitations in telling him this. He did things she liked, spent time with her, protected her, and did things that made her happy without even trying.
One day when walking home, Hinata and Shiro were chased by a car. After running away and escaping it, they found themselves confronted by Emi. Her father had fallen very deep into debt with a loan shark, and they planned to ransom Hinata in order to get the money they needed. Using a tazer, she knocked them both out. When they came to, their wrists were bound and they were locked inside a dark room. Thinking that Shiro had nothing to do with it, Hinata begged Emi to let Shiro go. It was then that Emi exposed Shiro as being a bodyguard that Hinata's father had hired to keep an eye on her. All of the things that he did that Hinata thought were wonderful coincidences had all been planned and done on purpose. And only because it was his job. Shiro broke his thumb in order to free his hands and untie Hinata. He broke them out, taking Emi with them.
When Hinata and Emi returned to school, Hinata offered her hand in friendship again, not holding it against Emi since she had promised not to hurt them and had been her friend. Still heartbroken, Hinata met up with Tomoaki once again. Tomoaki told her that Shiro had once fallen in love with a woman he was protecting, and because of it, she had been badly injured trying to protect him. Because of this Shiro had become cold and kept an emotional distance from people. But Tomoaki still believed that Hinata was able to change Shiro, and make him a bit more open. He gave her a copy of the last installment of "Suki" and told her he hoped that her story with Shiro would end the same way that his book did.
After reading the book, she talked to Touko and realized that she did still love Shiro. So she decided to go talk to him, but found his home empty. Confused, Hinata began to panic. Touko tried to calm her and told her there must be someone who knew where Shiro had gone. Hinata went to the only person who she knew would be able to tell her, Tomoaki. He told Hinata that Shiro was moving to a new town today, and that he was at the train station.
She found Shiro and Masaya. She told Shiro that she still loved him, and apologizes for being upset when she found out he had only been kind to her because it was his job. She loved him because he was kind to her, even if it was just his job. She fell in love with him because of the things he did for her, but now she decided she would love him for it. Shiro, embarrassed that this is all happening in front of Masaya, whispers in Hinata's ear that he loves her, and then gives her his phone number before leaving for his train. Hinata rejoiced, glad that Shiro did care for her.
